Visited Belmont State Park in Kentucky, which was the site of an important Civil War battle over control of The River. The park had on display a heavy chain and large oanchor that the Confederates had stretched across the River at this location in an effort to slow Union Naval vessels so they could be destroyed by Confederate cannons positioned on the banks high above The River.
Most dogs I see on this trip are not very endearing. But I came across a puppy today on a very remote Kentucky road that appeared to have been dropped off and abandoned. She had no tags, was quite timid, seemed malnourished and looked like she had been on her own for awhile. But when I stopped she was remarkably affectionate once she figured out that I meant her no harm. I took her to one of only a few farmhouses in the area and prevailed upon the family to take her. She seemed to be bonding with the mother when I left. I wished I could have taken her home with me but that just wasn't practical.
Night time low temperatures here in northwestern Tennessee are dropping into the 30s and low 40s for the next three days. It is too cold for tent camping comfortably with my gear. I will have to be careful in planning my travel as there are very few motels out here in rural western Tennessee.
I am very definitely in the South. My diet today included grits, two barbecued pork sandwiches and a fried baloney sandwich, a local favorite that is actually very good (or maybe I am just very hungry!). I passed a few Confederate flags and several people inquired about my "accent.". One guy said it sounded Irish!?!
